Electricity and water: if water is near outlets, panels or appliances, stay out and shut power off at the panel only if you can do so safely.

Burst or leaking pipe

Shut off the main water valve. Open a low faucet to drain pressure. Turn off power to wet areas if safe.

Sewer backup

Stop using water in the house. Keep away from the water. Don’t run washers or toilets.

Overflowing toilet

Close the shut-off behind the toilet (turn clockwise). Lift the tank lid and raise the float.

Basement flooding

Don’t enter water near outlets or appliances. Check the sump pump has power.

No hot water

Check the breaker or pilot. If the tank is leaking, close its cold inlet valve.

Frozen pipe

Open the faucet, warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer — never an open flame.
